Kananaskis Lakes Trail, Kananaskis, AB T0L 0K0, Canada
Visit WebsiteElk Pass Trail, located off Kananaskis Lakes Trail in the Foothills, offers a rewarding forest climb to West Elk Pass with mountain meadow views.
This route follows an old fire road for 4.9 km before crossing an open meadow and reaching the pass at the Alberta–British Columbia border. From here, hikers can continue into British Columbia toward Elk Lakes Provincial Park, with Elk Lakes headquarters and the Alpine Club of Canada’s Elk Lakes Cabin located 4.3 km beyond the border.
In summer, the trail alignment differs from the winter Elk Pass cross-country ski trail, which continues to the hydroline. Cyclists use this route to access Elk Lakes Provincial Park but must leave bikes in the parking area, and bikes are not permitted within the park itself. For current trail closures and advisories, visitors should check the Alberta Parks website before heading out.
