Avalanche Rescue Dog Demo & Talk

Join in for a unique winter demonstration where a highly trained dog searches, locates, and retrieves objects buried in snow, showcasing the techniques used in avalanche and snow rescue.
This special event is led by Don McPhalen and his canine partner Java, experienced CARDA members who will share their expertise and passion for canine search and rescue. Participants will have the chance to watch Java in action, learn about avalanche safety and training techniques, and hear firsthand stories from Don about the important role these dogs play in winter rescue operations.
After the outdoor demonstration, head inside the cozy Barracks for a talk with Don, where you can ask questions and learn even more. Warm up with hot chocolate for sale while enjoying the historic museum setting.
This family-friendly event is open to all, but please leave pets at home. Dress warmly for winter conditions, and please note that in the case of severe weather, the demonstration may be adjusted or rescheduled. On-street parking is available nearby. Please note that due to the historic nature of the building the NWMP Barracks is not wheelchair accessible.
The event takes place from 1 PM to 4 PM.
