G7 Trail Closures and Alternative Hikes

  • Summer
  • Tourism Canmore Kananaskis - May 29, 2025

The G7 Leaders’ Summit is an annual forum where leaders, ministers, and policymakers from the world’s most advanced economies gather to discuss global issues and collaborate on solutions. This year, the G7 Summit will be hosted in Kananaskis, Alberta, from June 15 to 17.

From June 10 to 18, all trails on the eastern slopes of Highway 742 (Smith-Dorrien Trail/Spray Lakes Road) will be closed to the public for security purposes due to the G7 Summit. Certain trails, day use areas, and campground may be closed sooner—please check the Alberta Parks website for the most up to date information. Highway 742 will remain open as well as all the trails on the western slopes of the highway.

Despite temporary closures and security presence, there is still plenty of space to explore, and many trails and outdoor areas remain open for visitors to enjoy. We curated a list of alterative recommendations for certain day use areas and trails that are closed due to the G7 Summit. These are friendly suggestions to be used as a starting point when you are researching hiking trails. Remember to do your own research and select a hike based on your skills, experience, and capabilities. The alternative trails listed are not closed due to the G7, but it is important to check the Alberta Parks website before you select your hike as trails may experience closures due to other factors.

Please note, this list is not comprehensive, and changes may be made as new information becomes available. Check the Alberta Parks website or contact one of the following resources for the most up-to-date information about trail closures:
