Kananaskis Conservation Pass
A Kananaskis Conservation Pass is required to recreate in Kananaskis Country. Passes are $15 per day or $90 per year and are registered to your vehicle’s license plate. You can purchase a passes online anytime before 11:59 pm on the date of your visit.
By purchasing a pass you’re helping keep this special part of Alberta beautiful and protected for generations to come. Each Kananaskis Conservation Pass helps pay for:
- Conservation – protecting habitat and reducing wildlife conflicts
- Public safety – enforcement, search and rescue
- Services and facilities – trails, day-use areas, recreation facilities, visitor and information centres

Vehicles parked at provincial parks and public land sites in Kananaskis Country and the Bow Valley need a Conservation Pass.

If you are not planning on stopping or using any facilities, a pass is not required.
Passes are registered to your license plate and covers all passengers within the vehicle. There is no extra cost for trailers. Pass purchases are non-transferable to another vehicle.
Personal vehicles
- Day pass – registers one vehicle
- Yearly pass – registers up to 3 vehicles
Commercial vehicles

To change your license plate or add a vehicle to your yearly pass, please call Alberta Parks Contact Centre at 1-877-537-2757.
As the pass is registered to the license plate, you will need to wait to purchase your pass until you have picked up your rental vehicle. The pass can be purchased until midnight on the day of visiting Kananaskis.
You are not required to have a pass for the Town of Canmore. For more information on areas where a pass is required, download the boundary map or view the interactive map.
The Kananaskis Conservation Pass does not cover the parking fee at Quarry Lake.
If the group is arriving in individual cars, each car requires a Kananaskis Conservation Pass. With a purchase of an yearly pass, you can put up to three vehicles on the pass (vehicles must be registered at the same address).
If the group arranges for group transportation the following fees apply:
- Vehicles that fit up to 15 passengers: $22.50 for a day pass or $135 for a yearly pass.
- Vehicles that fit more than 15 passengers: $30 for a day pass or $180 for a yearly pass.
