Local News & Travel Information

A number of popular trails and climbing areas in the Canmore area are closed until further notice.

Effective date: April 1, 2022 until Spring 2023

Where: 

Trail Closures:

  • Grassi Lakes Trail
  • Junkyard Trail
  • Reclaimer Mountain Bike Trail
  • Riders of Rohan Mountain Bike Trail

Climbing Area Closures:

  • Grassi Lakes Climbing Area
  • Ha Ling Climbing Area
  • East End of Rundle Climbing Area

Why:

To provide formalized parking and trailhead facilities, Alberta Parks will be expanding four parking lots in the Grassi Lakes and Goat Creek trail areas. To align with the parking lot work, trail construction work will occur on the Grassi Lakes trail and Goat Creek trail. Climbing Area Closures:

  • Cougar Creek Canyon

Why:

There will be construction and blasting activities to support the Town of Canmore Cougar Creek Sediment Retention Structure Project. The closure is in place for the safety of both the workers on-site and the general public, as the trail runs parallel to the construction site.
